When it came to Tom Daschle's tax problems, it seems to me there were two possibilities: (1.) he truly made an error of oversight on an imputed income tax issue of a significant amount, or (2.) he knowingly thought he could get away without paying a material amount of income tax.

Most European countries have high fuel taxes. The prices have traditionally been three to four times the U.S. price, with prices during 2000-2005 equivalent to $5.82/gal. During that same time, the U.S. had prices around $1.50/gal.
